An important milestone in the history of Pakistan is going to be crossed on November 30 when the water of the Indus River will be diverted from the Diamir Bhasha Dam, 40 km below Chilas. The river will rejoin its original course downstream through a kilometer-long tunnel and an 800-metre-long canal. It is a matter of great pleasure that WAPDA is completing this milestone on time.

The Diamir Bhasha Dam will not only store 8.1 million acre feet of flood water but will also generate 18 billion additional units of electricity annually from a 4,500 MW power plant and irrigate more than one million acres of land.

At present Pakistan’s major dams (Mangla, Tarbela and Gomelzam reservoirs) have a storage capacity of about 14.28 million acre feet of water while Pakistan has two major reservoirs, Mohmand Dam (1.239 m acre feet) and Diamer Bhasha Dam ( 8.1 million acre feet) is being constructed after which Pakistan’s total water storage capacity will be 23.58 million acre feet which has been continuously decreasing for the last forty years.

By diverting the river, the construction areas of Diamir Bhasha Dam will become dry and work will become easier. Diamir Bhasha Dam will be completed in 2028 Inshallah.
